1. What is a ‘dictionary by subject’?
A ‘dictionary by subject’ lists words according to topic (e.g. health, food, politics, clothes, family, and so on) rather than alphabet / alef bet. Every subject is broken down into nouns, verbs and adjectives, and categories are divided and sub-divided according to logic and association. Please use this link to view our Sample Chapter.

2. What is included on the audio CD?
The 12-hour Audio CD contains all of the vocabulary terms (over 10,000) read in English and Hebrew and follows the order of the book. Used together with the book, or on its own (e.g. while cooking, driving or jogging), it is an excellent tool for learning the correct pronunciation from the start, and improving your pronunciation on words you already know. It can also help learning and retaining the vocabulary.

3. How can this format help me to learn Hebrew?
A sound vocabulary is the basis of language acquisition, and is fundamental to all communication (verbal, written, listening & reading). By listing words according to subject, EHBS makes learning new vocabulary easy and effective. Research shows that vocabulary is easier to absorb and retain when learnt in context and using subject-based resources.

We also highly recommend using EHBS with a free flashcard software called ANKI. Used together they can make a phenomenal difference to your ability to learn and retain new vocabulary. For more information read our blog.

EHBS can also help you with self-expression in every subject, as all the relevant words you need are together in one place, e.g. if you need vocabulary for the Post Office, doctor, teacher’s meeting or job interview.

4. What age/level is EHBS for?
The vocabulary in each chapter covers a range of levels - from basic terms for beginners to academic/advanced level students, for people who have a strong interest in a particular field (e.g. law, real estate, psychology). It is ideal for anyone who has a basic grounding in Hebrew – and is generally used from age 10 onwards.

5. How is EHBS a ‘unique reference book’?
  • Users can find precise terms within context. E.g. if you wanted the word ‘sentence’ you would find the grammatical term under ‘Education’, and the legal term in ‘Law and Justice’. This avoids embarrassing mistakes and enables you to feel confident that you have found the correct term you need.
  • Verbs are given in both infinitive and third person past tense – great for conjugation in all tenses!
  • People and professionals are given in masculine and feminine forms (a unique referencing feature).
  • There are also 10 chapters addressing grammatical aspects such as prepositions, conjunctions and pronouns, and finally, 2 chapters on punctuation, prefixes & suffixes.
6. How can I find the terms I am looking for?
In order to find a particular term or subject, you can use the ‘Contents’ at the beginning of the book, which lists all chapters and sub-categories, and / or the indexes at the end of the book, where subjects are listed alphabetically and in more detail.

7. Who is it useful for?

    All students of Modern Hebrew:
Beginners: Beginners (with a basic grounding) will particularly benefit from the inclusion of Hebrew vowels (to assist reading) and the Audio CD (to aid correct pronunciation).
Young learners: EHBS is aimed at students from 10 years old upwards.
High-school, college and university students: EHBS is excellent for writing essays (to generate ideas and find relevant terms quickly and easily), as well as studying for exams (the format is ideal for methodical revision and self-testing).
Intermediate, proficiency and academic level students.

English Speakers living in Israel (e.g. Olim Chadashim/Vatikim):
Chapters such as ‘House’, ‘Education’, ‘Town’, ‘Health’ and ‘Economy’ and many others contain essential practical day-to-day vocabulary for people moving to or living in Israel. Learning these terms and others in EHBS can facilitate a smooth transition (e.g. setting up bank accounts, organising schooling), eventual mastery of the language, and ultimately better integration.

    Professionals:
English speakers working with Israelis, or who have made Aliyah can benefit from core vocabulary specifically relevant to their field, e.g. “Economy’, ‘Law’, ‘Sciences’, or ‘Health’, as well as other terms that are indirectly relevant to their work, e.g. postal services, telecommunication/computing, real estate, economy, and more, depending on their profession.

    Language Teachers/Tutors:
Being subject-based, EHBS works well with many current learning resources/curricula. It is particularly useful for giving students vocabulary lists to learn, or to use as a basis for exercises, role-plays, discussion groups, and essay writing.

    Visitors & Tourists to Israel:
Chapters such as ‘Food’, ‘Transport & Tourism’, ‘Performing Arts’ and many more are full of useful vocabulary for all visitors to Israel.

8. What does mp3 format mean and where can I play my CD?

The CD has an mp3 format (which allows us to fit 700 minutes on one CD), and therefore might not play on older CD players.
It should however play on the following:

    • Computers
    • mp3 players (e.g. i-pods)
    • DVD players
    • Most car CD players
    • Recent models of other CD players
